Tim Stephens has more than 25 years of experience in business development, contract management, and strategic planning. He is a senior consultant and advisor to numerous organizations, including the National Center for Community Strategies. He was the founding director of the Emergency Services Coalition for Medical Preparedness, which advised the Department of Homeland Security on personal protective equipment for first responders. Tim has a deep governmental network and has provided strategic planning, business development advice, and facilitation to the Inter Agency Board, the National Governors Association, the American Ambulance Association, the Vermont Hospital Association, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
He has held numerous executive positions in healthcare organizations at the national level, including the MESH Coalition, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), and the National Association of Public Health Information Systems. His strength in networking, external relations, and communications ensured these organizations thrived during periods of significant change. At ASTHO, he guided the federal policy for the states during the first years of the bioterrorism program and developed the first national meeting of states by states for state preparedness leaders.
He is a frequent commentator on public health and emergencies. In 2021, he published his overview of the 1918 pandemic, One Day at a Time: Newspapers and the Great Influenza of 1918. He is also the co-author of a book on health conditions and African American history at Arlington National Cemetery, which was published in 2020.
He received a Master’s degree in Communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism. His undergraduate degree is in Film and English from the University of Warwick, England. He became a U.S. Citizen at 2:18 pm on November 20, 1998, at the Guilford County, NC, Court House.
